FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I took an at home pregnancy test. Do I need to come in and get tested still?

First Choice PRC offers free and confidential urine pregnancy tests. They are lab quality urine tests similar to the tests used in doctor’s clinics and hospitals. Though home pregnancy tests usually accurately indicate the presence of the hormone hCG (the hormone present during pregnancy), occasionally false results do occur. If your test is positive with us, we will discuss scheduling you for a free ultrasound to determine the viability of your pregnancy and how far along you are. These are important first steps before considering your possible options for the future.

I had sex last night and the condom broke. Can I come in for a pregnancy test?

Though it can be a challenge to wait, the hormones that are produced in your body after conception do not normally show on a urine pregnancy test until up to two weeks. We suggest waiting a week and a half to two weeks before scheduling or coming in for a test.

Can I just come in? Or do I need to schedule an appointment?
The team at First Choice PRC wants to be sure that we are able to set aside enough time to provide you with the resources and education you need. To do this, we recommend calling or texting to schedule and appointment. Feel free to stop in at any time during open hours though because we’re happy to see you!

How long does an appointment last?
Typically each appointment takes 45-60 minutes.

Do I need to bring anything to my appointment?
To protect your confidentiality, we ask that you bring a photo ID. This can be a government issued ID like a driver’s license, or a student ID. If you have had a positive pregnancy test read at another medical location, please bring your proof of pregnancy.

I’m a minor and I’d like to receive services from First Choice PRC. Will you tell anyone about what we talk about?

Information shared with First Choice PRC staff and volunteers is confidential. However, if the information discussed indicates your safety is at risk or you are involved in an abusive relationship, additional persons may need to be involved.

Can I bring a friend with me?
We understand that needing a close friend or family member is important during times like this. Feel free to bring someone along! We will meet personally with you first to give you privacy during the intake process, but afterward when you feel ready, your friend will be able to join you.

Can I come in for an ultrasound to find out the sex of my baby?

The ultrasound exam at First Choice PRC is indicated for answering three questions:is the pregnancy in the uterus, how far along is the pregnancy, and is there a heartbeat present. Our services are not indicated for gender identification.

How can I go see a doctor if I don’t have any insurance?
There are options available for people who need care even if they don’t have insurance. With a pregnancy verification from First Choice PRC, you can begin the process to obtain state funded health insurance (in Wisconsin it’s known as BadgerCare) at the Health and Human Services office or online.

Can I get an abortion from First Choice PRC?
First Choice PRC does not perform abortions or refer for abortion services. However, we can provide you with education in regards to what you may expect physically, mentally, spiritually, and financially when choosing abortion as a pregnancy option.

If I’ve already had an abortion, what can you do to help me?
At First Choice PRC we want you to know you are not alone. Sometimes, that simply means just listening. We want to offer what you need to heal or find hope after an abortion in a safe, non-judgmental setting. Every person is different in the way they process experiences and what is needed afterward. Please call or email to learn what that might look like for you.
